Fishing in Southwest Michigan
Southwest Michigan is a popular destination spot for fisherman of all types. Due to its countless lakes and rivers, you can deep-water fish, ice-fish or just wade into a stream, knee-high. Michigan offers some of the best freshwater fishing in the world. It has roughly 146 kinds of fish ranging from the tiny minnow to the giant lake sturgeon. You can fish for salmon, trout, walleye, perch, smelt, pike, catfish, crappie, sucker, bass, muskie and much more. Many second home owners in Southwest Michigan, enjoy fishing in the world-class steelhead fishery located just below Berrien Springs. This fishery is stocked with more than 250,000 fish every year. Take the kids to see the fish ladder on the river, and watch the steelhead and king salmon make their annual journey.
Remember, a Michigan fishing license is required and can be purchased at most local sporting stores or bait shops. The Michigan DNR can give you more information at 517-373-0908.
