Snow Skiing in Southwest Michigan

With the abundance of winter sports available in South Michigan, it is often called a Winter Wonderland.  Choose from dog sledding, tubing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling.  The West Michigan Tourist Association website will keep you informed on ski conditions at most of the well known ski spots.  This is also a good source for winter festivals and activities in the area.

The Big Powderhorn Mountain, located in Bessemer, MI is a wonderful ski resort which features day and night skiing, ski instruction and a variety of dining options. When you are feeling the cold, head inside and enjoy the indoor miniature golf course or relax in the pool.

The Swiss Valley Ski Area is located at 13421 Mann Street in Jones, MI.  This is a family oriented resort which offers 11 runs, two quads, on triple and four rope tows for the beginner's area.  They have snow making ability and each slope is lighted for night skiing.  Swiss Valley features two "Terrain Parks" designed for snowboarding.  The chalet lounge is the perfect place to relax in the evening next to the fire.  Swiss Valley Ski is Michigan's closest ski area to Chicago and Indiana and is just 50 minutes from Lake Chapin Shores, a second home community.

Love Creek Park is located near Berrien Springs at 9292 Huckleberry Road, Berrien Center. It features five miles of groomed, lighted “traditional” ski runs, as well as many cross-country ski trails. Madeline Bertrand is located in Niles.  It offers three miles of level to gently rolling trails through the forest.  Its trails will take you along a bluff overlooking the St. Joseph River, which provides skiers with a beautiful view. Skiers can also enjoy exploring trails in the adjacent St. Patrick’s County Park in Indiana. Rental equipment is available on site.

Kal-Haven Trail State Park consists of 34 miles of crushed limestone path connecting South Haven and Kalamazoo. The trails, which are very popular for hiking in the warmer weather, become the perfect place to enjoy the beauty while cross-country skiing through miles of woods, farmland and more.

Cannonburg Ski Area has added a little extra to the ordinary when it comes to ski resorts.  It is proud to have the highest vertical in Southwest Michigan and features trails for the unnerved beginner as well as the seasoned professional.  With one of the most revolutionary snow-making technologies and special room rates at a nearby hotel, Cannonburg is a favorite spot for all level skiiers.

Alpine Valley is truly a full-service ski area.  It offers 25 breathtaking slopes, 9 ski-lifts, and four picturesque parks, which combine to create one of the largest ski areas in Southern Michigan.  Merely three hours from Berrien Springs this Resort ski park provides fun for all ages and abilities.  Alpine Valley will have you coming back time and again.  Don’t have your own skis?- no problem, a brand new fleet of rentals enables visitors to participate in any activity the mountain can offer.

Crystal Mountain provides a beautiful setting for skiing in the winter, complete with 45 slopes and night skiing daily.  A family friendly resort, kids 18 years and younger sleep and ski free during the week (when accompanied by parental accommodations).  However, Crystal Mountain is also an oasis for golf lovers in the warmer seasons.  This 1,500 acre resort is open year-round and located in the northwest Lower Peninsula.
